Space Physics Laboratory conducts front ranking research in different disciplines of Atmospheric, Space, and Planetary Sciences. SPL offers excellent and challenging research opportunities in various areas like atmospheric boundary layer physics, atmospheric aerosols, trace gases, clouds, radiation budget, physics/chemistry/dynamics of the lower, middle, & upper atmosphere, numerical atmosphere modelling, vertical and lateral coupling processes, ionosphere-magnetosphere system, space weather, lunar & planetary explorations and modelling.

SPL has an active Research Associate program for brilliant young Ph.D holders who have carried out Ph.D thesis work outside SPL in the areas of Atmospheric/Space/Planetary Sciences, with good publication record. The RA fellowship is initially for 1 year. Depending on the progress of the work, research output and availability of positions, the fellowship is extendable for the 2nd year, and in exceptional grounds up to 3 years. At present, the maximum number of RA positions at SPL under this stream is 7.

Important Information

Eligibility:

  1. 1. Candidates should have Ph.D. degree with the thesis work and publications in the areas of Atmospheric Science/Space Science/Planetary Science, which are relevant to the fields of research being carried out at SPL (Please visit https://spl.gov.in to know more about the research activities at SPL).
  2. 2. Only those candidates who have carried out Ph.D. thesis work outside SPL are eligible to apply under this stream.
  3. 3. A research proposal (not exceeding 2000 words) on the work they intend to carry out at SPL in the domain of SPL's research activity must be submitted along with the application.

[Candidates possessing Ph.D. degree awarded by foreign universities/institutions have to submit its Equivalency Certificate issued by the Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi]

Upper Age Limit:

40 years as on the date of application (43 years for OBC candidates and 45 years in case of SC/ST candidates. Persons with Disability are eligible for age relaxation as per rules).

Selection Process:

Applications received online will be screened periodically, over a period not exceeding 3 months. The qualification prescribed is the minimum requirement and the same does not automatically make candidates eligible for the interview. After the initial screening of the application on the basis of the Ph.D thesis work, journal publications and merit of the submitted research proposal, the candidates found suitable will be called for an interview at VSSC, if vacancy exists. If the positions are not available at the time of screening, the screened in candidates will be called for interview as and when vacant RA positions are available.

Pay and Allowances:

The Research Associateship is initially for a period of ONE YEAR and is renewable to the Second year (third year in exceptional cases). As the total number of RA positions is limited, the renewal after the first year will depend on the progress of the work, research output and availability of positions. The RA position carries an amount of Rs.47000/- for the first year, Rs.49,000/- for the second year and Rs.54,000/- for the third year. Candidates are also eligible for HRA as admissible to regular employees of VSSC.

General Conditions:

  1. 1. The number of positions indicated is provisional.
  2. 2. Only short listed candidates will be called for Interview.
  3. 3. At the time of interview, the candidates will have to produce proof of the details furnished in the application, including:
    • Originals of all certificates, mark sheets, Ph.D. degree certificate as proof of educational qualification, [Equivalency Certificate in case of foreign degree], date of birth, proof for any relaxation of upper age limit, journal publications, proof of work experience, journal publications, etc.
    • No Objection Certificate, from the employer concerned in respect of those applicants who are employed under Central / State Government / Public Sector Undertakings / Autonomous Bodies.
  4. 4. Outstation candidates called for Interview will be paid to and fro Second Class Railway Fare by the shortest route including reservation/sleeper charges on production of proof of journey such as Railway Tickets/Ticket Number or Bus tickets, etc. If the candidates travel in a higher class of accommodation than the one prescribed, only Second Class rail fare excluding the reservation charges/sleeper charges will be paid.
  5. 5. If any information furnished in the application is found to be incorrect or false on verification, the candidate will not be permitted to attend the interview and Travelling Allowance will not be paid.
  6. 6. The Centre reserves the right not to fill up the position, if it so decides.
  7. 7. Only Indian Nationals need apply.
  8. 8. No interim correspondence will be entertained.
  9. 9. Canvassing in any form will be a disqualification.
