Space Physics Laboratory conducts front ranking research in different disciplines of Atmospheric, Space, and Planetary Sciences. SPL offers excellent and challenging research opportunities in various areas like atmospheric boundary layer physics, atmospheric aerosols, trace gases, clouds, radiation budget, physics/chemistry/dynamics of the lower, middle, & upper atmosphere, numerical atmosphere modelling, vertical and lateral coupling processes, ionosphere-magnetosphere system, space weather, lunar & planetary explorations and modelling.
SPL has an active Research Associate program for brilliant young Ph.D holders who have carried out Ph.D thesis work outside SPL in the areas of Atmospheric/Space/Planetary Sciences, with good publication record. The RA fellowship is initially for 1 year. Depending on the progress of the work, research output and availability of positions, the fellowship is extendable for the 2nd year, and in exceptional grounds up to 3 years. At present, the maximum number of RA positions at SPL under this stream is 7.

The qualification prescribed is the minimum requirement and the same does not automatically make candidates eligible for the interview. After the initial screening of the application on the basis of the Ph.D thesis work, journal publications and merit of the submitted research proposal, the candidates found suitable will be called for an interview at VSSC, if vacancy exists. If the positions are not available at the time of screening, the screened in candidates will be called for interview as and when vacant RA positions are available.
The Research Associateship is initially for a period of ONE YEAR and is renewable to the Second year (third year in exceptional cases). As the total number of RA positions is limited, the renewal after the first year will depend on the progress of the work, research output and availability of positions. The RA position carries an amount of Rs.47000/- for the first year, Rs.49,000/- for the second year and Rs.54,000/- for the third year. Candidates are also eligible for HRA as admissible to regular employees of VSSC.
Government strives to have a workforce which reflects gender balance and women candidates are encouraged to apply.
